Horse meat has a slightly sweet taste and resembles a combination of venison and veal. Meat from younger horses is lighter in color, while older horse meat is darker, just like with other animals. Horse meat can successfully replace veal, beef, pork, lamb, venison, and other game, and in recipes it requires slightly shorter cooking time than, for example, veal and pork.

Horse meat is also used to produce cured meat products, which can be found at larger markets and in specialized butcher shops that sell horse meat in Belgrade (ZELENI VENAC market and KOTEŽ market). In any case, horse meat is cheaper and appears to be a healthier alternative to other types of meat.
