The hippodrome Belgrade is the oldest sports establishment in this city.

By decree written by King Alexander in 1920, the Danube society of riders "Knez Mihajlo" was gifted state land for free lease for a period of 75 years in order to "satisfy the country's need for a permanent track to hold publick horse racing matches'. The decree was published in the service newspaper number 272 on 7th December 1921. That year the first gallop derby was held and the first race of the city of Belgrade which has since become traditional. In September 1930 the first revial gait races were held.
