The National museum in Belgrade is the oldest museum institution of that type in our city. It was founded by Jovan Sterija Popovic on the 10th of May 1844 as "Muzeum serbski" 

Before the National museum was construted in this location there existed the Belgrade tavern "Dardaneli" where the cultural and artistic elite of that age would gather. By tearing down the old tavern in 1901 the transformation of the Republic square. The current building of the museom was constructed in 1903 for Fund management where "Hipotekarna" bank - one of the oldest banking companies in Belgrade moved in afterward. This building became the building of the National museum in Belgrade in 1952.

The most valuable article which is kept in the National museum is Miroslav gospel - the oldest and most precious cyrillic manuscript which originated around 1190.
