The "Djurmukane" building was constructed around 1835 during the reign of Knez Milos next to the river Sava. Back then it represented the old "gate" of Belgrade - the place where people entered and left Serbia. It got its name from the Turkish word "gumruk" which means "shipping". It was the first building in Belgrade constructed using stone and bricks.

This building had one of the largest halls in Belgrade, so some of the first theatre plays within "Theatre in Djumuruk" were held here. The first theatre play was held by Joakim Vujic who showed his actors before a city audience then for the first time.
