Back to: Issuance of a green card
Issuing a green card (green certificate) is one of the most important administrative steps you must take before you set off on a trip to certain foreign countries with your vehicle. The green card is actually an international auto liability insurance certificate, which serves as proof that your vehicle has valid mandatory insurance in the home country. In the event of a traffic accident abroad, this document guarantees that the damage to third parties will be compensated, thus avoiding astronomical fines and complicated legal processes.
If you also need a fast issuance of a green card, on this page you can find a list of technical inspections and insurance companies in Belgrade.
Thanks to the Multilateral Agreement, drivers from Serbia can travel to most European countries (including Croatia, Greece, Montenegro, Bulgaria and Hungary) without a green card, only with a registration sticker. However, this document is still strictly mandatory if you plan to travel to the following countries:
Northern Macedonia (a key transit route for everyone traveling by car to Greece on vacation)
Bosnia and Herzegovina
Albania
Turkey, Tunisia, Morocco, Israel, Iran, Azerbaijan, Moldova and Ukraine
The issuing process itself is extremely fast and simple, and the document is obtained immediately on the spot at your insurer or at authorized technical inspections. All you need to bring is:
Compulsory auto insurance policy (original for inspection)
Traffic license of the vehicle for which the card is issued
The green card is issued exclusively in the name of the insurance company that also issued the basic auto-liability policy. It is important to know that this document is valid until the end of the parent insurance policy, regardless of when you picked it up during the registration year. If your registration expires in a month, the green card will only be valid for that amount.
If you are traveling in a vehicle that is not registered in your name, in addition to the green card, you must also obtain a Permit for driving someone else's vehicle abroad (yellow card). In case the vehicle is leased or owned by the company (official car), the technical inspection or insurance will also require an official, certified authorization from the leasing company or legal entity before they approve and print the document.
