From this place, located where today's Vozdovac district is, Duke Karadjordje led his uprisers and in 1806 liberated Belgrade from the Turks for the first time. To comemorate this event, the neighborhood was named Vozd's suburb and later Vozdovac.

After WWII the district was called VI region and in 1956 it became what it is today by joining the municipalities Lekino brdo with Vozdovac.
