Back to: Bow weapon
The tendon weapon represents a fascinating combination of centuries-old tradition, superior engineering and pure mechanics. Unlike firearms that use powder gases, string weapons rely on the accumulation of kinetic energy in flexible arms, which is released by releasing the tensioned string. Whether you're drawn to the sporting elegance of hunting and target shooting or looking for the ultimate in tactical and recreational gear, crossbows and bows offer a unique sense of focus, discipline and quiet power.
If you, too, need a quality bowstring weapon or accompanying equipment, on this page you can find a list of authorized shops and armories in Belgrade.
Modern string weapons are roughly divided into two main disciplines, each requiring a specific training style, skill and approach to archery.
Bows (Archery): Requires high physical fitness and coordination. They are divided into classic (traditional and Olympic) and compound (compound) bows that use a system of eccentric wheels (stones) in order to reduce the holding force at full draw, enabling easier and more accurate aiming.
Crossbows: Represent a bow mounted on a stock with a mechanical system for triggering and holding the string. They are extremely accurate and easier to learn than bows because optical or red dot sights can be mounted on them, and the pull force is retained mechanically.
One of the key parameters when choosing a string weapon is the tension force, which is expressed in pounds (lbs). Bows of 25 to 35 lbs are recommended for archery beginners, while advanced compound bows and crossbows for hunting can have a force of 60 all the way up to over 200 lbs for powerful crossbows. The choice of arrows (or crossbow bolts) directly depends on the strength of the weapon. Today, the standard is carbon fiber or aluminum arrows, which provide the perfect balance between weight, speed and durability when hitting the target.
According to the Law on Arms and Ammunition in Serbia, stringed weapons fall into category C or category D, depending on the force of tension. String weapons with a pull force greater than 101 lbs fall into category C and require reporting to the competent authority (MUP) within 8 days of purchase, while weaker models can be purchased freely (category D). Safety comes first: bowstring weapons must never be fired "empty" (without an arrow) as this can lead to broken arms and serious injuries, and shooting is only permitted at designated shooting ranges or safe, fenced areas.
