Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that plays a key role in the early detection and prevention of various gastrointestinal problems. This procedure allows doctors to visually examine the inside of the colon, detecting potential abnormalities and performing biopsy or therapy as needed. Find out how a colonoscopy is performed and how to prepare for the procedure itself.

What is a colonoscopy?
Colonoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that allows doctors to visually examine the inside of the colon and rectum. This procedure is essential for early detection and prevention of problems such as colon cancer, inflammatory bowel disease and other gastrointestinal disorders. Early detection of these problems allows for more effective treatment and improves the outlook for patients.

How is a colonoscopy performed?
This examination is performed with the help of a flexible instrument called a colonoscope. The device is equipped with a camera at the top, which allows the doctor to visually inspect the inside of the colon. The procedure is often performed under sedation to provide patient comfort and reduce discomfort. The doctor carefully inserts the colonoscope through the anus and moves through the large intestine, examining each part and looking for any changes, polyps or other abnormalities. If polyps or suspicious lesions are found, the doctor can perform a biopsy or remove the polyps during the same procedure.

Preparation for colonoscopy
Preparation for colonoscopy plays a key role in the successful performance of this procedure. Common preparation usually includes detailed steps such as switching to a liquid diet a day or two before the procedure, taking prescribed laxatives to clear the bowel of stool and toxins, to allow clear visualization of the bowel during the colonoscopy. Patients should follow the doctor's instructions and follow the recommended preparation exactly.
