Back to: Hemorrhoid surgery
Hemorrhoids are a health problem that affects a large part of the population, but it is often discussed with a degree of discomfort. Although milder forms can be treated with creams and a change in diet, in more severe stages (III and IV degrees), hemorrhoid surgery becomes the most effective solution.
Today, several surgical approaches are used in proctology, depending on the severity of the clinical picture. The classic method (Morgan-Milligan) involves surgical removal of nodes and is most often used in the most severe forms. In addition to it, the THD method is popular, which is based on ligation of the arteries that feed the hemorrhoids, which causes them to gradually recede. Also, the Longo method (stapler hemorrhoidectomy) effectively solves the problem of internal hemorrhoids by fixing the mucous membrane. Each method has its own specifics, and the proctologist surgeon makes a decision on the best approach after a detailed examination of the patient.
Laser surgery (LHP - Laser Hemorrhoidoplasty) is currently the most popular method due to its minimal invasiveness. The main advantage of laser treatment is the absence of incisions and stitches, because the laser beam works inside the hemorrhoids, closing the blood vessels and causing the knot to shrink. This results in significantly less postoperative pain compared to classical methods. Patients are usually discharged home the same day, and return to work is possible after a few days. Also, the risk of damage to the surrounding tissue and sphincter muscles is minimized, which makes laser surgery the gold standard of modern medicine.
The success of the operation largely depends on the postoperative regimen, where nutrition plays a key role. The main goal is to prevent constipation and maintain a soft stool to avoid straining during defecation. A diet rich in soluble fiber, which includes plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains, is recommended. Hydration is equally important, intake of at least two liters of water per day is mandatory. Patients should avoid spicy and hot food, dried meat products, alcohol and coffee, because these foods can irritate the anal canal and slow down the wound healing process.
