What is an EMNG review?

EMNG is a neurophysiological examination consisting of two components: electroneurography and electromyography. The first part examines nerve conduction using gentle, controlled electrical impulses that stimulate the nerves while measuring the speed and amplitude of their response. The second part of the review focuses on muscle work; with the help of a thin, sterile needle-electrode, the electrical activity of the muscles at rest and during contraction is recorded. The results of EMNG are of crucial importance for diagnosing conditions such as disc herniation, carpal tunnel syndrome, polyneuropathies or various muscular dystrophies.

What does preparation for EMNG look like?

Proper preparation is simple, but very important to get precise results. On the day of the examination, the skin of the hands and feet must be completely clean. Patients are advised not to apply creams, lotions or oils, as oily traces on the skin create resistance to electrical impulses and interfere with the electrodes. It is recommended to shower with hot water immediately before arrival, so that the circulation is better and the extremities are warmed. Also, it is important to inform the doctor if you use anti-clotting therapy or have a pacemaker implanted.

Are there any side effects after EMNG examination?

One of the most frequent questions of patients is the safety of the procedure itself. EMNG is a completely safe and minimally invasive method. After the examination, patients can immediately return to their daily activities. In the places where the needle-electrode was used, there may be mild, transient sensitivity or a small bruise, similar to that after a blood draw, which disappears within 24 to 48 hours. There are no long-term side effects, and the examination can be safely repeated if necessary to monitor the course of treatment.
