The Geographic Institute Jovan Cvijic of SANU was founded on May 31st 1947 by SANU, and it was one of the first Academy\'s science units. The institute was founded for the development of geographic science and increase of science staff, especially young ones, as well as preparation of that staff for work on the University. The name of Jovan Cvijic, the founder of Serbian geography and one of the leading scientists in Serbia, the Institute carries since 1961.
