Back to: Key cutting
Key engraving is one of those quick, but much needed services that each of us encounters at least a few times in our lives. In addition to classic house keys, modern precision tools also enable the copying of complex car keys with a chip, as well as smart tags for buildings.
If you also need fast key cutting, on this page you can find a list of experienced locksmith shops and locksmiths in Belgrade.
The locksmith trade followed the development of security systems, so today's modern locksmith shops use computerized copying machines of different generations and types of protection.
Classic (cylindrical) keys: Standard flat keys with serrated teeth that are most often used for ordinary entry locks, padlocks and interior doors.
Dot (coded) keys: Used for security and armored doors. Instead of teeth, these keys have specific cylindrical depressions (holes) on their surface, made on the basis of a precise code.
Car keys with a chip (encoded car keys): In addition to the metal part itself, these keys also contain an electronic transponder (chip) without which the car engine cannot be started.
RFID tags and cards: Electronic plastic tags that work on the principle of proximity reading, and are used to unlock common doors in modern residential buildings.
In the past, threading was done exclusively by hand, while today automatic and semi-automatic machines of high precision are used in modern services. The machine works according to the principle of a follower and a milling cutter - the original key is placed in one side of the clamp where a special probe "reads" the depth of each tooth or hole, while on the other side a rotating knife (milling machine) maps that identical shape onto the blank (empty) profile of the key. At the very end, the master uses sharp rotating brushes to remove small metal filings so that the new key does not scratch the inside of the cylinder and to turn the lock smoothly.
If your key is bent, never straighten it with pliers or a hammer because the metal is weakened and next time it will crack inside the lock itself, creating a huge expense. Experienced locksmiths can cut a brand new and functional key even from broken parts of an old key, provided you bring both pieces. To avoid stressful situations and emergency lockpicking interventions in the middle of the night, it is always wise to have at least one spare set with a trusted neighbor or relative.
