Biomicroscopy

Eye health care begins with timely examinations and accurate diagnostics. Biomicroscopy is one of the key ophthalmological methods that enables a detailed examination of eye structures and early detection of problems. On this page, find a list of ophthalmology offices located in Belgrade.

What is biomicroscopy?
Biomicroscopy is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure used to examine the anterior and posterior segments of the eye. This method uses a specialized device, a biomicroscope (or slit lamp), which allows the ophthalmologist to analyze structures such as the cornea, lens, retina, and optic nerve under high magnification and with a focused beam of light. Biomicroscopy plays a key role in detecting conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, eye injuries, infections, inflammations, degenerative changes in the retina and many other problems. Thanks to this procedure, the doctor can make a precise diagnosis and start adequate treatment on time.

How is biomicroscopy performed?
The procedure itself is simple and completely painless. The patient sits in front of the biomicroscope and rests his chin and forehead on special holders of the device. An ophthalmologist uses a focused beam of light and a microscope lens to examine different parts of the eye. In some cases, the doctor may use drops to dilate the pupils to allow a better view of the back of the eye, including the retina and optic nerve. During the examination, the patient should follow the doctor's instructions, such as focusing his eyes in a certain direction, so that the examination is as accurate as possible.

When is biomicroscopy necessary?
Biomicroscopy is necessary when there are symptoms such as blurred vision, eye pain, redness, foreign body sensation or eye injuries. It is also recommended for people who have a history of eye diseases, such as glaucoma, cataracts or diabetic retinopathy. For preventive purposes, it is recommended to perform biomicroscopy once a year in people with healthy eyes. In patients with existing eye conditions or risk of developing eye diseases, the examination may be more frequent, in accordance with the recommendation of the ophthalmologist.
