Measuring eye pressure Belgrade

Measuring eye pressure

Measuring eye pressure is an important part of a regular ophthalmological examination and a key step in the diagnosis of glaucoma - a serious eye disease that can lead to permanent vision loss. This simple and quick examination can detect potential problems in time, allowing timely treatment and preservation of eye health.

What is eye pressure?
Ocular pressure, also known as intraocular pressure, is the pressure of the fluid inside the eye. This fluid, called the aqueous humor, circulates through the eye and helps maintain its shape. The normal value of eye pressure is between 10 and 21 mmHg (millimeters of mercury). When eye pressure is too high, damage to the optic nerve can occur, leading to glaucoma. Low eye pressure can also cause problems, such as eye collapse. This is why it is important to measure eye pressure regularly in order to maintain eye health.

How is eye pressure measured?
Eye pressure is measured using a device called a tonometer. There are two main methods:
1. "Puff" tonometry (non-contact): This method uses a gentle stream of air directed towards the eye. The patient does not feel pain, but only short-term air pressure.
2. Applanation tonometry (contact method): This method involves gentle contact of the tonometer with the surface of the eye. Before the examination, the patient is given an anesthetic to reduce discomfort.
Both methods are safe and quick to perform, and the ophthalmologist can choose the most appropriate technique based on the patient's condition.

Why is it important to measure eye pressure?
Regular eye pressure measurement is key to preventing glaucoma and other eye diseases. Glaucoma is known as the "silent thief of sight" because it often has no symptoms until serious damage has occurred. Early detection of elevated eye pressure can help prevent vision loss and preserve quality of life. It is recommended that all adults over the age of 40 have their eye pressure measured at least once a year, especially if they have a family history of glaucoma.
