Gluten-free pastries

Gluten-free diet is becoming more and more popular, both among people who have health reasons to avoid gluten, and among those who want to eat easier and healthier. Gluten-free baked goods are an excellent alternative to classic wheat products, allowing people with celiac disease, intolerance or gluten allergy to still enjoy bread, rolls and other baked goods. If you are looking for proven places in Belgrade where you can buy fresh gluten-free pastries, this page contains a list of recommended shops and bakeries.

What does gluten-free pastry mean?
Gluten-free pastry does not contain wheat, barley, rye or other grains that naturally contain gluten - a protein that in some people causes indigestion, inflammation or even serious intestinal damage (in people with celiac disease). Instead, flour from rice, corn, buckwheat, millet, chickpeas, almonds or other gluten-free sources is used, with additives such as psyllium or xanthan gum to help achieve the desired texture.

Does gluten-free pastry taste the same as usual?
Gluten-free pastry may have a slightly different taste and texture, especially if it is made without additional binding and flavoring ingredients. However, thanks to advanced recipes and the availability of quality flours, modern gluten-free pastries can be just as tasty and soft as classic ones. Many bakeries today offer breads, scones and pastries that are almost imperceptibly different from the standard, but completely gluten-free.

Is gluten-free bread healthier than regular bread?
Gluten-free bread is not automatically healthier, unless you have a health reason to avoid gluten. In some cases, gluten-free products contain more sugar or fat to compensate for texture and taste. However, when made from gluten-free whole grains, they can be a rich source of fiber, vitamins and minerals. The key is to read the ingredients and choose quality products, not just the "gluten-free" label.
