Making cake decorations

Regardless of whether it is a birthday cake, a wedding, a christening or some other special occasion, decoration plays a big role in the visual impression and atmosphere of the event. On this page you can find a selection of pastry shops where you can order or learn how to make cake decorations in Belgrade.

What materials are used to make cake decorations?
The most common choices for decoration are fondant and gum paste – masses that are easily molded and dried into solid shapes, suitable for making flowers, figures and other details. There's also royal icing for precise drawings, whipped cream and buttercream for soft shapes, as well as chocolate and poured caramels for sophisticated details. By using edible paints, glitter and molds, it is possible to get decorations that are not only beautiful, but also completely edible.

Can the decorations be made in advance?
Many decorations – especially those made of fondant and gum paste – are made several days in advance so they have time to harden and hold their shape. It is an ideal solution for confectioners and hobbyists who want to prepare the decoration in advance and avoid stress right before an important event. Proper storage, in a dry and dark place, allows the decorations to remain preserved until the moment when the cake is decorated.

What are the most popular types of cake decorations?
The most popular decorations depend on the occasion, but always popular are fondant and gum paste flowers, personalized figurines (eg for birthdays or weddings), inscriptions and numbers, themed shapes (such as baby accessories, school symbols or cartoon characters), as well as minimalist chocolate, nut or fruit decorations. Edible images made of sugar foil and gold details are also increasingly used for a more luxurious look.
