Back to: Gingivectomy
Gingivectomy is a routine surgical procedure that solves a number of aesthetic and functional problems associated with the soft tissue of the oral cavity. Whether the reason for the intervention is of a health nature or a desire for better aesthetics, this treatment allows patients to regain self-confidence and ensure the long-term health of the dental braces.
If you are looking for dental practices that also offer ingivectomy services, find a list of them in Belgrade on this page.
Gingivectomy is a surgical procedure to remove part of the gums (gingiva). The goal of the procedure is the elimination of excess tissue that can interfere with proper oral hygiene or disrupt the visual harmony of the smile. During the intervention, the dentist precisely removes the targeted tissue, which makes the dental crowns more visible, and the periodontal pockets, in which bacteria collect, are significantly reduced. Thanks to modern techniques, the procedure is quick, performed under local anesthesia and enables very precise shaping of the gum edge, which contributes to a natural and healthy appearance.
This intervention is applied in two basic cases. The first is aesthetic, known as the "gummy smile" treatment (gums that are too visible when smiling). By removing excess tissue, the teeth regain their natural length, and the smile becomes harmonious. Another reason is therapeutic. In patients suffering from periodontitis, deep pockets often form between the teeth and gums, which cannot be adequately cleaned. Gingivectomy allows the removal of these pockets, which directly prevents further progression of the disease and tooth loss. It is also recommended for patients who have swollen gums due to wearing fixed dentures or taking certain medications.
Traditional gingivectomy is performed using a scalpel. Although very effective, it may require a longer healing period and sometimes stitches. On the other hand, laser gingivectomy represents a revolution in patient comfort. The use of a dental laser enables a bloodless procedure because the laser simultaneously cuts tissue and performs coagulation (closes blood vessels). The advantages of the laser are multiple: there is no need for suturing, the risk of infection is reduced to a minimum, and the postoperative recovery is much faster and almost painless.
