Prepress

Prepress is a necessary process that ensures that a graphic design is properly formatted and ready for high-quality reproduction on paper, plastic or other material. Whether it's business cards, flyers, catalogs, billboards or packaging, properly preparing your print files helps the final product look professional, with accurate colors and sharp details. On this page, find a list of printers and graphic studios that provide these services in Belgrade.

What does prepress mean?
Prepress is a technical process that includes optimizing and adjusting the design according to the requirements of the printing house so that the final print is faithful to the original idea. This process includes:
• adjusting the document dimensions and adding safety margins
• applying a bleed, usually 3 mm on all sides, to avoid white edges when cutting
• converting colors from RGB to CMYK, as CMYK is used for printing
• increasing the resolution to an optimal 300 dpi to avoid pixelation
• embedding fonts or converting text to curves to avoid display problems
• adding passer and cutting lines if necessary

What are the most common file formats for preparing for printing?
The following formats are most often used:
• PDF (Portable Document Format) – the most reliable format for printing, because it preserves image and text quality, supports layers and embedding fonts
• TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) – used for high-quality images and design, because it preserves the original resolution and colors
• EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) – a format often used for vector illustrations and logos, allows scaling without loss of quality
• AI (Adobe Illustrator) – original format from Adobe Illustrator that is great for vector work and can be directly exported for printing
• PSD (Photoshop Document) – used for layered designs in Adobe Photoshop, but it is recommended to export to PDF or TIFF before sending to print

What is the difference between RGB and CMYK colors in print?
One of the most common mistakes in prepress is using the wrong color model. RGB and CMYK are two different color systems used for different purposes:
• RGB (Red, Green, Blue) – used for digital displays, such as monitors, televisions and mobile devices. RGB colors are brighter and more vibrant, but cannot be identically transferred to printed materials.
• CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) – used for printing and consists of four basic colors that are mixed to form all other tones.
If the design remains in RGB format, the colors on the printed material may look washed out or completely different than what is seen on the screen. That is why it is necessary to convert all files to CMYK before sending to the printing house in order to transfer the colors as faithfully as possible to paper or other material.
