What is ear surgery?
Ear surgery, or otoplasty, is a procedure used to shape and adjust the ears. This procedure is usually aimed at ears that are unnaturally protruding, oversized, or irregular in shape. The goal of the operation is to place the ears in a more aesthetically pleasing position and achieve symmetry with the rest of the face. Otoplasty is popular among children and adults, as it can significantly improve self-confidence.
How is surgical correction of the ears performed?
Surgical correction of the ears is usually performed under local anesthesia. The surgeon makes small incisions behind the ear, where the scars are less visible. During the operation, the surgeon removes or models the cartilage and uses stitches to place the ear in the desired position. The procedure usually takes 1 to 2 hours, and the patient can return home the same day. The results are visible immediately after the operation, but the final result stabilizes over several weeks.
What are the possible complications after ear surgery?
Although ear surgery is a safe procedure, as with any surgery, there may be some risks. Possible complications include infection, bleeding, scarring, irregularities in the shape of the ears, or changes in skin sensitivity in the area. Although complications are rare, it is important to follow post-operative advice and have regular follow-ups with your surgeon to minimize potential problems.
