Back to: Car water pumps
Car water pumps are key components of the engine cooling system. Their role is to pump coolant through the system and thus maintain the optimum engine temperature. When the water pump is not working properly, the engine can overheat, further causing significant damage and repair costs. Looking for a water pump for your car? This page lists the locations where you can obtain this replacement part.
Mechanical Water Pumps
There are several types of water pumps for cars, but the most common are mechanical pumps that use a belt driven by the engine. They consist of a pump housing, rotor, seal and shaft, and in some cases a thermostat. When the engine is running, the belt turns and drives the rotor, which pumps coolant through the cooling system. These pumps are fairly easy to maintain, but can wear out over time and require replacement.
Electric Water Pumps
In newer cars, electric water pumps are also increasingly popular. They work in the same way as mechanical pumps, but use an electric motor instead of a belt to drive the rotor. The advantage of these pumps is that they do not wear out as quickly as mechanical pumps, but also that some of them cannot provide sufficient coolant flow in extreme driving conditions. In order to keep your car's water pump in good condition, regular maintenance of the cooling system is necessary. This includes checking the fluid level and possibly topping up if necessary, as well as regular monitoring of the condition of the water pump. If you notice signs of leakage or other damage, it needs to be replaced.
