Back to: Cardan
The driveshaft is a vital part of the power transmission system in most rear-wheel or four-wheel drive vehicles. This part is located between the gearbox and the differential and serves to transfer torque and power from the engine to the drive wheels. If you need a gimbal for your vehicle, on this page you can find locations where they can be obtained.
Parts, dimensions and materials for the cardan
The cardan consists of two internal and one external shaft (or smaller shaft) which are interconnected by cardan joints. These pivots are bent at an angle to each other to compensate for the difference in camber between the transmission and drive shaft. If these pins were not bent, there would be vibrations and uneven transmission of power to the wheels. The gimbal can be made from a variety of materials, including steel, aluminum and carbon fiber. Steel is the most common material because it is durable and cheap. However, aluminum and carbon fiber are used in high performance vehicles due to their lower mass and greater resistance to vibration. The cardan can also be made in different lengths depending on the different dimensions of the vehicle. In the case when the gimbal is longer, it becomes more prone to vibrations, so it must be precisely balanced to prevent vibrations.
Gimbal maintenance
The gimbal requires regular maintenance. It is necessary to regularly check its length, the gap between the joints, as well as the condition of the cardan cross. If any irregularities are noticed, the cardan must be replaced or repaired.
